How to Export Outlook Contacts to vCard File

vCard is a virtual business card. vCards offer a user-friendly interface along-with other options like Picture placeholder and additional notes. The saved .vcf files contain all contact information like first name, last name, birthday, postal and email address, phone number, fax number, notes, photos, and other contact fields.

Exporting contacts into standard electronic business card (.vcf) file helps to import it into many email clients and different devices such as Lotus Notes, Mozilla, Thunderbird, Eudora, Microsoft Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Google Gmail, Apple iCloud, Apple Address Book, Windows Address Book, Mac Address Book, iPhone and iPad, BlackBerry, Palm, Android devices, other devices and programs.

Reasons to export contacts from Outlook to vCard files:

  • Import contacts to another email client like Gmail
  • Manage contacts in Excel (e.g. to bulk edit contacts and import them back to Outlook)

4 Manual Methods to Export Outlook Contacts to vCard File

Method 1: Steps to export Outlook contacts to vCard (.vcf) file format:

  1. Launch Microsoft Outlook.
  2. Go to the navigation bar.
  3. Click on People (for Outlook 2013) or Contacts (for Outlook 2007, 2010).
  4. Select the contact(s) to export in vCard format.
  5. Go to the File tab, click Save As button.
  6. Specify the folder and location to save the file, set the Save as a type to vCard files.
  7. Click Save to export all the contacts in vCard file format.

#Method 2: Export Outlook Contacts to vCard File using Outlook’s Import and Export Wizard:

  1. Go to the Contacts folder and open the contact to export to a vCard.
  2. In the window with an opened contact, go to File.
  3. Click Save As and choose the target location as .vcf

Method 3: Export Multiple Contacts as vCard with Forward Function

To export multiple contacts as vCard, forward the contacts as a business card and then save them in a folder.

  1. Select the contacts to export as vCard. Click Home > Forward Contact > As a Business Card.
  2. In the Message window, right-click at the contacts in Attached field, choose Select All from context menu.
  3. Press Ctrl + C to copy the contacts, go to a folder to locate the contacts, press Ctrl + V to place them.

Note: For Outlook 2007 or previous version, click Actions > Send Full Contact > In Internet Format (vCard)

Method 4: Export Outlook Contacts into CSV file and then convert CSV file to vCard (.vcf) File

Step 1: Export Outlook contacts into CSV file

  1. Launch Microsoft Outlook.
  2. Open File menu and select Open & Export.
  3. Select Export to file followed by Import/Export and click Next.
  4. Select contacts to export into CSV file
  5. An option appears to save CSV file. Click OK.
  6. Map custom fields and click Finish.

Step 2: Convert CSV file to .vcf File

  1. Press Win + R to open Run command and search Contacts folder.
  2. Click Import and choose CSV file. Click Import.
  3. Browse CSV file, map custom fields, click Export.
  4. Select vCard file, click Export.
  5. Provide destination path to save the file, click Done.

Limitations of Manual Process:

  • Manually export Outlook contacts to VCF file might be a time-consuming process for some professionals.
  • The manual steps to convert Outlook contacts to vCard (.vcf) file can be confusing for some professionals.
  • The professional is advised to perform the steps with proper and complete information, any missed step may lead to change in important data.
