Activate/Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Amazon AWS Account using a Virtual MFA Device

Perform the below steps to activate/enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on your root Amazon AWS account using a Virtual MFA device:

  1. Login to your AWS IAM Management Console.
  2. Click Sign in to Console.
  3. Sign in using AWS Login Credentials and then click Sign In.
  4. Search for IAM or navigate to Security, Identity & Compliance → IAM:
  5. Under Security Status, select Activate MFA on your root account → click Manage MFA.
  6. A pop-up message screen Manage MFA device appears. For the two options to select the type of MFA device to activate MFA in AWS account, select A virtual MFA device option → click Next Step.
  7. Download Google Authenticator for Android Devices app from Google Play Store → tap OPEN to launch the application.
  8. Tap BEGIN to proceed with the Authentication process.
  9. On Add an account screen, tap Scan a barcode and scan the barcode displayed on the manage MFA device screens.
  10. he moment you scan the barcode, the Google Authenticator will display the 2-Authentication code one after the other.
  11. Enter the Authentication code 1 and Authentication code 2 → click Activate virtual MFA to enable MFA in AWS account
  12. After the Authentication Code is successful, the success pop-up message appears as “The MFA device was successfully associated with your account”. This shows that Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Amazon AWS account is successful.
  13. When you login to the console next time, an Authentication Page is displayed: Amazon Web Services Sign In With Authentication Device. Enter the Authentication Code to successfully login to the AWS account.
